At a conference on the Neglect and Abuse of the Elderly in Brussels, Belgium, it was reported that more than 80% of abuse of the elderly is not reported and not well researched.
Surveys carried out in a number of European Union (EU) countries indicate that the vast majority of abuses, either physical or financial, are committed by family members or caregivers.
Speakers called for this 'hidden' abuse to be highlighted and for the elderly to be granted the same level of human rights and dignity as the rest of society.
