Please Support Alzheimer’s Association

  • This year, the first wave of baby boomers are turning 65 – and with increased age comes increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.
  • Our new report, "Generation Alzheimer's: The Defining Disease of the Baby Boomers," sheds light on a crisis that is no longer emerging – but here.
  • Many baby boomers will spend their retirement years either with Alzheimer's or caring for someone who has it.
  • An estimated 10 million baby boomers will develop Alzheimer's.
  • Starting this year, more than 10,000 baby boomers a day will turn 65. As these baby boomers age, one of out of eight of them will develop Alzheimer’s – a devastating, costly, heartbreaking disease. Increasingly for these baby boomers, it will no longer be their grandparents and parents who have Alzheimer’s – it will be them.
  • "Alzheimer’s is a tragic epidemic that has no survivors. Not a single one," said Harry Johns, president and CEO of the Alzheimer’s Association. "It is as much a thief as a killer. Alzheimer’s will darken the long-awaited retirement years of the one out of eight baby boomers who will develop it. Those who will care for these loved ones will witness, day by day, the progressive and relentless realities of this fatal disease. But we can still change that if we act now."
  • According to the new Alzheimer’s Association report, "Generation Alzheimer’s," it is expected that 10 million baby boomers will either die with or from Alzheimer’s, the only cause of death among the top 10 in America without a way to prevent, cure or even slow its progression. But, while Alzheimer’s kills, it does so only after taking everything away, slowly stripping an individual’s autonomy and independence. Even beyond the cruel impact Alzheimer’s has on the individuals with the disease, Generation Alzheimer’s also details the negative cascading effects the disease places on millions of caregivers. Caregivers and families go through the agony of losing a loved one twice: first to the ravaging effects of the disease and then, ultimately, to actual death.
  • "Most people survive an average of four to six years after a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, but many can live as long as 20 years with the disease. As the disease progresses, the person with dementia requires more and more assistance with everyday tasks like bathing, dressing, eating and household activities," said Beth Kallmyer, senior director of Constituent Relations for the Alzheimer’s Association. "This long duration often places increasingly intensive care demands on the nearly 15 million family members and friends who provide unpaid care, and it negatively affects their health, employment, income and financial security."
  • In addition to the human toll, over the next 40 years Alzheimer’s will cost the nation $20 trillion, enough to pay off the national debt and still send a $20,000 check to every man, woman and child in America. And while every 69 seconds someone in America develops Alzheimer’s disease today, by 2050 someone will develop the disease every 33 seconds - unless the federal government commits to changing the Alzheimer’s trajectory.
  • "Alzheimer’s – with its broad ranging impact on individuals, families, Medicare and Medicaid - has the power to bring the country to its financial knees," said Robert J. Egge, vice president of Public Policy of the Alzheimer’s Association. "But when the federal government has been focused, committed and willing to put the necessary resources to work to confront a disease that poses a real public health threat to the nation – there has been great success. In order to see the day where Alzheimer’s is no longer a death sentence, we need to see that type of commitment with Alzheimer’s."
  • The full text of the Alzheimer’s Association’s "Generation Alzheimer’s" report can be viewed at www.alz.org/boomers.

The Alzheimer's Association is the world’s leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s care, support and research.

Our mission is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

Reports of elder abuse result in Restraining Orders...But Not How You´d Think...

by Janet Phelan as originally reported on Salem News

In an unparalleled action in an ex parte hearing on April 1, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Reva Goetz issued a Restraining Order against a local physician, Dr. Laura Moire, blocking her from taking further action or making more reports in regards to conservatee Jean Tanaka.

Dr. Moire, who is considered an expert in elder abuse, is a founder of the Geriatric Division of the American College of Emergency Medicine, a founding member of the American College of Forensic Medicine as well as a member of the White House Conference on Aging, among numerous other honors and affiliations. Dr. Moire took a sole action of calling both Adult Protective Services and the police on the evening of March 30, 2011, in an attempt to alert these agencies as to her concerns of abuse being inflicted upon Mrs. Tanaka through the auspices of conservator Linda Cotterman.

In an interview last week Dr. Moire stated that she had testified during the conservatorship trial of Tanaka on March 3 and was concerned to learn that no action had been taken to address her concerns as to Mrs. Tanaka's care.

Moire's testimony dealt with a number of specific areas wherein she stated that Tanaka's health was impacted by the type of care being delivered by Cotterman. These included concerns that Mrs. Tanaka was forcibly removed from her spacious Westwood home and subsequently confined in a small basement apartment, as well as the discontinuation of physician prescribed supplements which had previously stabilized Mrs. Tanaka's blood pressure, normalized her cholesterol levels, built bone density, and strengthened her immune system and cognitive functioning. This discontinuance has been followed by 5 back -to- back urinary infections,4 collapses and several hospitalizations where she was transported unconscious by ambulances none of which were brought to the attention of a cardiologist. She has reportedly suffered weight loss, lack of basic dental care, isolation and restrictive monitoring of highly limited visits with her daughter, Jeannie.

Of specific concern to Dr. Moire was the placement of Mrs. Tanaka on “comfort care” in the absence of any terminal condition or diagnosis, which has resulted in not only the continued withdrawal of care (such as supplements) which were deemed beneficial to the ninety-five year old woman but the denial of care for her now painfully swollen hands, extreme fatigue, and what has been reported as sudden inability to stand up on her own and walk, brainfog and erratic blood pressure.

The Salem News has obtained a copy of the ex parte notice, written by attorney Margaret Lodise, in which she advises that “we will be making an ex parte application tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. In Room 258 (Dept. 9) seeking an order restraining either Jeannie or Dr. Moire or either of their agents from making any calls to the police, the paramedics or any similar agency reporting elder abuse regarding Mrs. Tanaka until further order of the court.” Lodise's office has declined to comment on this matter .

At the April 1st hearing, Judge Goetz chose to also restrain Jeannie from any further contact with her mother. According to witnesses, Jeannie showed up at her mother's dwelling that evening after Dr. Moire had made the phone calls to APS and police and was not involved in Dr. Moire's actions. Goetz subsequently reversed this decision on April 13th, allowing Jeannie a total of three hours per week of paid monitored visitation with her mother.

Dr. Moire states she was not served with a notice of hearing and calls the efforts to restrain her “ludicrous and illegal.” She has previously typified the efforts to separate mother and daughter as follows: “The isolation from daughter Jeanie is sorrowfully self expressed by Mrs. Tanaka and deprivation from the company of her daughter Jeanie is cruel and abusive to them both.” Jeannie Tanaka has been ordered to pay hundreds of dolllars per visit to a monitoring company.

The use of Restraining Orders to restrict family members from their ability to oversee the care of conservatees has become epidemic. In a case involving conservatorships and the rich and famous, Goetz also approved a temporary restraining order against singer Courtney Love that bars her from seeing or contacting her daughter, Frances Bean Cobain. Love had protested that her daughter, who is under a guardianship, had been molested by Jamie Spears, who is the father (and conservator) of another famous conservatee, singer Britney Spears. In a less publicized case, retired peace officer Willliam Horspool was restrained from his father, conservatee Raymond Horspool, after taking photographs which allegedly demonstrated the poor care being received by his father. San Bernardino Court Judge Michael Welch said he “didn't believe” the photos, which apparently showed the elder Horspool lying in soiled bedclothes, and ordered the photos destroyed. William Horspool was subsequently restrained from his father without a hearing, a violation of the due process clause of the U.S. Constitution.

The use of a restraining order to block a physician, who is a mandated reporter of elder abuse, from reporting elder abuse may be groundbreaking. According to Jeannie Tanaka's attorney Robert Canny, the decision by Judge Goetz effectively overturns the First Amendment to the US Constitution and Article 1, Section 2 of the California Constitution.

Last June, conservator Linda Cotterman called the police and told them that Jeannie had violated a Restraining Order by visiting her mother. Jeannie Tanaka, who is an attorney with the State of California, was hauled away in handcuffs in full view of her mother. She was released from custody prior to booking when the police discovered there was no Restraining Order in place. Jeannie Tanaka has filed a complaint with the Los Angeles police, stating that Cotterman knowingly made a false police report. The State of California deems false police reports to be a misdemeanour punishable by jail. At the time of going to press, Cotterman has not been taken into custody.

Both Mrs. and Jeannie Tanaka, who are Japanese American, are survivors of the World War II detention camps. President Roosevelt had ordered all Japanese Americans to be rounded up and herded into detention facilities, as potential enemies of the State.

A Review of Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows

A Review of Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows

Book-by- Melanie Joy, Ph.D. ---Review below by Angela Woodhull , this review of Melanie's book as it relates to the Elder Abuse and Exploitation Reform Movement.

Yesterday, I attended a power point presentation at the local library by Dr. Melanie Joy, the author of Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows.

Dr. Joy pointed out that “all systems of oppression depend on our ability to dissociate or find elaborate rationalizations to keep from recognizing the suffering of a socially sanctioned inferior.”

Sound familiar, folks? This is exactly what we do to the elderly when we take away their civil rights, stick them in nursing home dungeons against their will, and allow attorneys, through their judge associates, to steal all of their assets and convert them into attorneys’ fees.

Dr. Joy asked the audience, “When is the last time you saw a farm animal?”

Her point? The animals are kept tucked away at the slaughter houses and that if most people ever witnessed what goes on in the slaughter houses, it would traumatize them.

We do exactly the same thing to our elderly when we tuck them away in nursing home dungeons and then allow attorneys to consume their assets.

And that which is not seen or witnessed is so much easier to exploit.*

Dr. Joy believes it is a “cultural mentality” – a mental disconnect-- that allows the slaughtering and eating of some animals, such as cows and pigs, and the loving of other animals, such as dogs, to transpire.

Perhaps if more judges, attorneys, and professional guardians became vegetarians or vegans, they would also develop a transference of sensitivity to the elderly that would not allow financial exploitation and nursing home physical and emotional neglect to occur. Perhaps we are evolving as a society and as more people embrace a healthier and more humane diet, the mistreatment of our elderly will cease.

Could it be that dietary awareness could lead to more humane laws and justice? Dr. Joy believes that justice depends on our ability to speak up, witness to the truth, and make dietary changes.

I believe that by embracing a consistent reality and sensitivity toward all living beings on Planet Earth, our treatment of the elderly, the unborn, and all of God’s creatures may become more humane.

Talk Doesn't Pay, So Psychiatry Turns To Drugs

Changes in insurance payments are driving the switch from couch to prescriptions.

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. Alone with his psychiatrist, the patient confided that his newborn had serious health problems, his distraught wife was screaming at him and he had started drinking again. With his life and second marriage falling apart, the man said he needed help.

But the psychiatrist, Dr. Donald Levin, stopped him and said: "Hold it. I'm not your therapist. I could adjust your medications, but I don't think that's appropriate."

Like many of the nation's 48,000 psychiatrists, Levin, in large part because of changes in how much insurance will pay, no longer provides talk therapy, popularized by Sigmund Freud. Instead, Levin prescribes medication, usually after a brief consultation with patients. So he sent the man away with a referral to a less costly therapist and a personal crisis unexplored and unresolved.

Medicine is rapidly changing in the United States from a cottage industry to one dominated by large hospital groups and corporations, but the new efficiencies can be accompanied by a telling loss of intimacy between doctors and patients. And no specialty has suffered this loss more profoundly than psychiatry.

Levin, 68, first established a private practice in 1972, when talk therapy was in its heyday.

Then, like many psychiatrists, Levin treated 50 to 60 patients in once- or twice-weekly talk-therapy sessions of 45 minutes each. Now, like many of his peers, he treats 1,200 people in mostly 15-minute visits for prescription adjustments that are sometimes months apart. Then, he knew his patients' inner lives better than he knew his wife's; now, he often cannot remember their names. Then, his goal was to help his patients become happy; now, it is just to keep them functional.

Levin has found the transition difficult. He now resists helping patients to manage their lives better. "I had to train myself not to get too interested in their problems," he said, "and not to get sidetracked trying to be a semi-therapist."

Brief consultations have become common in psychiatry, said Dr. Steven S. Sharfstein, a former president of the American Psychiatric Association and the president and chief executive of Sheppard Pratt Health System, Maryland's largest behavioral health system.

"It's a practice that's very reminiscent of primary care," he said. "They check up on people; they pull out the prescription pad; they order tests."

Levin's office, just above Dog Daze Canine Hair Designs in this suburb of Philadelphia, has no couch or daybed; Levin has neither the time nor the space for patients to lie down anymore.

"I miss the mystery and intrigue of psychotherapy," he said. "Now I feel like a good Volkswagen mechanic."

Merry Christmas!

I'd say "Happy Holidays" but last time I looked, there were no other holidays at the end of December. The fact that a majority Christian country must downplay the celebration of Christ's birth is yet another example of the Illuminati's subtle satanic control over mankind.

Almost everything we seek is a poor substitute for what we really crave, possession of our own soul. We never experience ourselves as spirit because we are taught to seek an illusory material or carnal substitute. Christ represented the Truth within. For Christmas, I am re-posting a popular article from 2007 about finding it.

by Henry Makow Ph.D.

[Memo to Myself]

This isn't about storing silver coins or canned food or getting an AK-47.

It's about saving your soul, not your skin. It's about the tendency to obsess on the New World Odor, get depressed and become unbearable.

The situation is depressing. A satanic cult controls the credit of the world and rules through myriad proxies. It is determined to destroy civilization and institute an Orwellian police state.

You spend your hours addictively watching for new developments. Your face is pressed up against the shop window of the world.

You are "externalized." You can't go into the kitchen without switching on the radio.

You try to squeeze your sustenance from the world. But much of what you imbibe is poisonous: depravity, corruption, duplicity and tragedy. (Is that the point of the mass media? To demoralize and brutalize?)

Mankind is in the grip of a diabolical force that constantly strives to legitimize itself through deception. You can't overcome this demon. But you still control your personal life. Ultimately, the battle is for the soul of humanity. Why not begin by defending your own?

This means erecting a wall between the soul, and the world, and establishing a balance between the sacred and the profane. You need to shut out the world (the profane) for set periods of time and focus on what inspires you. That means turning off the TV, Internet and media in general.

Just as you nourish your body with food, you feed your soul with thoughts, sights and sounds. Your soul reaches out for beauty, grace, harmony, truth and goodness. You become what you think about.

What lifts your spirit? It might be a long walk, nature, hobby, sport, or music. It might be time with your family or friends. It might be the Bible, religious writing or meditation.

"Do what you love," Henry David Thoreau said. "Know your own bone; gnaw at it, bury it, unearth it, and gnaw at it still."

You agree with the mystics who say happiness is within. It involves the possession of your soul, and not wanting anything else. By looking outside your self, you displace your soul and become addicted to the thing you want. This is the source of unhappiness.

The occult elite controls us with sex and money- the North-South of the mind. The courtship stage is a period when sexual feelings are strong so two people will bond and start a family. Sex/romance were not meant to become a lifelong preoccupation and panacea.

The same is true of money. The stock market is a giant casino addicting millions. The central banking cult has unlimited funds. To make us feel good, (while it trashes civil rights and wages senseless war) it makes the market go up. To fleece us, it crashes the market. Don't be their puppet.

The diabolical powers have been here for a long time. You have discovered their existence only because they signaled their endgame on Sept. 11.

Don't let them stunt or degrade you by obsessing on their iniquity. Restore balance by attuning yourself to the things you love. Be an outpost of happiness.

------------

Part Two: Making Your Own Heaven

The world often seems like a stuffy public toilet without ventilation. This is because Protagoras' dictum "man is the measure of all things" is the official religion.

Modern culture mostly consists of reflections of our degenerate selves, a "wilderness of mirrors" as T.S. Eliot said. We inhale our own fumes. The religion of man is "humanism "or "illuminism" which deifies man.

Plato tried to correct Protagoras. "God and not man is the measure of all things."

We didn't listen to Plato.

God is now banished from public life. When was the last time a Divine Standard was applied to anything? When is humanity's highest self ever celebrated? That would be like a breath of fresh air.

REMOVING THE NEW WORLD ODOR

This is about spiritual survival in a world gone insane.

We have a tendency to feel helpless, unable to affect faraway events. In fact, we are on the front lines. The New World Odor wants our mind and soul. We fight back by dedicating ourselves to God instead.

First we have to short-circuit their two main control systems: sex and money. We can direct our sex drive by confining it to a monogamous relationship. We can escape the money compulsion by living within our means, and disciplining ourselves so money is a minor concern.

Henry David Thoreau said, "A man is rich in proportion to the number of things he can afford to leave alone."

The truly rich man is the one who does not think about money. By this standard many billionaires are paupers. In fact, the more money a person has, the harder it is to think of anything else.

REORIENTATION

Why should we obey God? God is really the principle of our own development and the path to our happiness and fulfillment. We serve ourselves when we serve God.

God is synonymous with spiritual ideals: love, truth, justice, beauty.

Think life has no meaning? Life has intrinsic meaning when we fulfill God's purpose. We need to ask, "What does God want of me? What was I born to do?"

God speaks to us through our spirit and conscience. We don't hear Him because our minds are like mirrors facing the world. We need to turn the mirror around so it faces the soul inside and shows its back to the world.

Instead of blotting up the world, which makes us weary and sick, we focus on things that reflect our desire for purity, hope, beauty and goodness.

Instead of letting the world determine what we think (and therefore feel) we create our own world based on how we want to feel. That's what faith is all about, making spiritual reality paramount.

"I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable ability of man to elevate his life by a conscious endeavor," Thoreau wrote in "Walden."

"It is something to carve a statue...but it is far more glorious to carve ...the very atmosphere and medium through which we look, which morally we can do. Every man is tasked to make his life, even in its details worthy of the contemplation of his most elevated and critical hour."

By making our thoughts conform to our soul, instead of the world, we create our own heaven. All great religions teach us to control our thoughts. Our minds are altars and our thoughts are offerings to God.

"Muddied water, let stand, becomes clear," said Lao Tzu.

In the Hindu tradition, mind discipline is called "Raja Yoga." By learning to meditate, we learn to have constructive thoughts. The key is to treat your thoughts as though they were a stranger's, and edit them. If you master this skill of detachment, you will never be depressed, never go mad for the simple reason that
you will not be identified with a negative mental complex.

Christians might maintain their vigilance by asking, " What would Christ do? What would Christ think?" Christianity, in a nutshell, is the imitation of Christ.

Prayer is another form of meditation. Whatever our opinion of Timothy Leary, he had the right idea in High Priest: "Prayer is the compass, the gyroscope, the centering device to give you direction, courage and trust..."

A CONCENTRATION CAMP IN THE MIND

How long has it been since you felt happy? Yes, it rankles that pathetic scoundrels control the world. But man is not the measure of all things. No matter what happens on earth, God is the only Reality. The earth is like a postage stamp. Look beyond man and focus on spiritual reality: beauty, goodness, justice and love.

We place ourselves in concentration camps before they're even built. The Illuminati is not likely to shatter the illusion of freedom. There is no better way to control people. But even if they did, we must be capable of joy even then. God is Joy and God is far greater than man.

The key is to ignore the crowd, which is manipulated by the Illuminati. It's good to be aware but we do not dance to tunes tapped out by degenerates. We do not gaze at mirrors made by midgets.

The words of poet Henry More (1614-1687) are also relevant.

"When the inordinate desire after knowledge of things was allayed in me, and I aspired after nothing but purity and simplicity of mind, there shone in me daily a greater assurance than ever I could have expected, even of those things which before I had the greatest desire to know."

Retiring from the world periodically ensures that we don't forfeit the only sphere where we still have power. It enables us to make a wholesome contribution to society.

As Paul Elmer More (1864-1937) said, "A day that makes me happy makes me wise."

Let's master the art of happiness.

Why I'm Depressed

Over five thousand years ago, Moses said to the children of Israel, "Pick up your shovels, mount your asses and camels, and I will lead you to the Promised Land."

Nearly 75 years ago,(when Welfare was introduced) Roosevelt said, "Lay down your shovels, sit on your asses, and light up a Camel, this is the Promised Land."

Today, the government has stolen your shovel, taxed your asses, raised the price of camels and mortgaged the Promised Land!

I was so depressed last night thinking about Health Care Plans, the economy, the wars, lost jobs, savings, Social Security, retirement funds, etc . . . called a Suicide Hotline. I had to press 1 for English. I was connected to a call center in Pakistan. I told them I was suicidal.

They got excited and asked if I could drive a truck......

Americans Drowning in Prescription Drugs

By: Mike Adams as published in: Natural News

Nearly half of all Americans now use prescription drugs on a regular basis according to a CDC report that was just released (1). Nearly a third of Americans use two or more drugs, and more than one in ten use five or more prescription drugs regularly.

The report also revealed that one in five children are being regularly given prescription drugs, and nine out of ten seniors are on drugs.

All these drugs came at a cost of over $234 billion in 2008. The most commonly-used drugs were:

• Statin drugs for older people
• Asthma drugs for children
• Antidepressants for middle-aged people
• Amphetamine stimulants for children

America has become a nation of druggies. The seniors are being drugged for nearly every symptom a doctor can find, children are being doped up with (legalized) speed, and middle-aged soccer moms are popping suicide pills (antidepressants).

Prescription drug addictions are on the rise, too. Prescription drugs are so dangerous that now even the DEA is hosting "take back your pills" day allowing citizens to anonymously surrender their unused prescription painkillers to DEA agents. (http://www.herald-dispatch.com/news/briefs/x1431852393/DEA-hosting-take-back-initiative-for-unused-pills)

Interestingly, DEA agents will only accept "legal" amphetamine drugs such as Ritalin but not "illegal" methamphetamine drugs. You're only off the hook if you paid monopoly prescription prices for your drugs.

And it's only going to get worse

The percentage of Americans taking prescription drugs is expected to rise even further as the health reform insurance regulations kick in. Much of the bill was specifically designed to favor pharmaceutical industry interests by putting even more people on medication. Expect to see more "screening" too -- a thinly disguised drug recruitment method that primarily seeks to ensnare new patients in a high-profit drug regimen.

The mass medication of American citizens has reached a disturbing tipping point where the future of the nation itself is at risk. That's because pharmaceuticals cause cognitive decline, and once you get to the point where over 50 percent of the voters can't think straight, you're trapped in a crumbling Democracy.

And that doesn't even take into consideration the financial cost of America's addiction to drugs: With nearly one out of every five dollars out of the entire U.S. economy now being spent on sickness and disease, America finds herself stuck in a cycle of high-cost drug treatments that cure no one.

That's right: No one gets healthier from taking prescription drugs. They don't cure anyone and they don't prevent disease. They only maintain patients in a kind of "pre-death stasis" where they're alive just enough to keep buying more medication. Drug companies don't want you dead because that would cut off their profits. But they don't want you healthy, either, because then they wouldn't have you as a customer. So their drugs are actually designed to keep you in a state of ongoing disease without curing your condition but also without killing you outright.

You sort of chemically limp along, shelling out dollars while your memory fades and your skin starts to show signs of severe toxicity. Big Pharma is not merely sapping the life out of you; it's also draining you financially.

Isn't it obvious that pharmaceuticals don't work?

If pharmaceuticals really worked to make people healthy, then the half of America currently taking pharmaceuticals would be the healthiest half, and the people who don't take pharmaceuticals would be unhealthy, right?

But in fact it's the other way around: People who take pharmaceuticals remain unhealthy and really never get cured of anything. Meanwhile, those who avoid taking pharmaceuticals are, by and large, far healthier individuals.

If America were running a grand experiment to determine whether pharmaceuticals really work -- and trust me, the country really is running precisely that experiment -- any reasonable observer would have to conclude that pharmaceuticals really don't improve the health of those who take them. The more pharmaceuticals you take, in fact, the sicker you will become. That's because drugs cause an imbalance in the body that soon leads to the emergence of other side effects.

At the same time, many of the drugs people take actually cause the very things they claim to prevent. Osteoporosis drugs cause hip fractures. Cancer drugs cause cancer. Antidepressants cause suicidal thoughts. The list goes on and on.

The people who are really, truly healthy in America are those who avoid pharmaceuticals. (http://www.naturalnews.com/028789_pharmacies_health_food_stores.html) They take care of their own health through regular exercise, time in nature, sensible sunshine exposure and healthy eating. They distrust the pharmaceutical industry and they don't let television advertising hypnotize them into making poor decisions like getting a flu shot (http://www.naturalnews.com/029641_vaccines_junk_science.html).

Yet even though it is blatantly obvious that pharmaceuticals really don't work to improve the health of any population, the drug industry insists the only thing wrong with America's health is that not enough people are taking medication!

If we could only get 100% of the population on drugs instead of 50%, they seem to be saying, then we'd all be healthy!

The logic is absurd, of course. And that goal has nothing to do with actual health but everything to do with increasing drug company profits. While drug companies may not know much at all about health, they do know one thing: How to commit marketing fraud by making outrageous benefit claims for their drugs while whitewashing the very real dangerous side effects.

Big Pharma will bankrupt America

Mark my words: Big Pharma will bankrupt America. And quite possibly the UK as well. Any nation that hands over its health care system to the drug industry is committing financial suicide.
That's because Big Pharma absolutely will not halt its single-minded mission to extract as much money as possible from the population, corporations and governments. It will do anything and everything it can to accomplish this goal: Bribe researchers to commit research fraud, engage in false and fraudulent marketing, lie to the public, hide negative study results, conduct experiments on children in third-world countries, pollute the planet with drug factory runoff, influence legislators with campaign finance contributions, dominate the pages of medical journals with false and misleading advertising, submit "scientific" articles to the journals ghost-written by the drug companies themselves... this list never ends.

Drug companies will knowingly keep dangerous drugs on the market that kill tens of thousands of people. They will knowingly withhold research from the FDA if it might make their drugs look bad. They will knowingly distort clinical trial data to eliminate whatever outcome they don't want to see.

This is all "routine" in the drug industry. These aren't exceptions, mind you: They are the way the drug industry operates on a daily basis.

The worst part of it is that Big Government is now fully in bed with Big Pharma. I already exposed Sen Harry Reid's efforts to swing a sweet deal for Big Pharma in the recent health care reforms (http://www.naturalnews.com/029450_Harry_Reid_Big_Pharma.html). The FDA's collusion with drug companies, meanwhile, is legendary: There is hardly a decision made by the FDA that doesn't in some way protect drug company profits.

The med schools and science journals have been overrun by drug company influence. Drug companies are so large and powerful now that the U.S. government considers them "too big to nail." When Pfizer was recently found guilty of felony crimes, the government allowed it to create a shell company to take the hit so that Pfizer itself could remain in business and keep selling drugs to the government. (http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/04/02/pfizer.bextra/index.html)

A federal prosecutor actually went on the record saying, "If we prosecute Pfizer... a lot of people who work for the company who haven't engaged in criminal activity would get hurt."

Therefore, the logic goes, they have to let Pfizer off the hook.

And so it goes; Big Government protecting the criminals in the drug industry, making excuses for looking the other way when scientific fraud and marketing fraud is routinely being carried out right under their noses. The Dept of Justice isn't even interested in taking down criminal drug companies!

How this will end

So where does this medication madness ever end? It will end, I predict, with the economic downfall of the United States of America. When the nation is too broke, too medicated and too chemically compromised to stay afloat, it will suffer an enormous economic collapse.

Following the financial failure of big government, Big Pharma will implode virtually overnight. Without the government buying its products, Big Pharma will find few willing private customers. Ordinary people will seek out affordable and safer natural remedies, and the drug industry will collapse to perhaps 10% of its current size.

This will be a great day for the health of all Americans who have suffered under the chemical assault of Big Pharma. To live without the daily onslaught of Big Pharma's chemicals is to live a healthier life with improved brain function and awareness. Once people get off all their drugs, we might have hope to thoughtfully rebuild a nation based on nutrition rather than monopoly-priced medications.

I've said this at least a hundred times, and I'll say it again: No nation that ignores the nutritional health of its citizens has any real future. A successful long-term society MUST, at its core, invest in real nutrition and the holistic health education of its citizens. Without good nutrition, every society is ultimately doomed to fail.

Modern medicine, in other words, is destroying our country. And the "cure" for this disease is to throw out what doesn't work (pharmaceuticals) and start embracing the things that do work (nutrition and superfoods) to keep people healthy.

Stages of Pro Se Litigation Stress Disorder

-by-

Angela V. Woodhull, Ph.D. © 2010, AV Woodhull

1. Shock and Disbelief (The law is good. The law is supposed to be just. How could a judge do such a thing to me?)

2. Vindication and Determination (I’m going to find an attorney who will right this wrong!)

3.Shock and Disbelief (I have such a strong case! I certainly thought an attorney would take such a case on a contingency fee basis since I can’t afford exorbitant legal fees.)

4.Vindication and Self-Determination (I’ll just learn to plead the law myself. It can’t be that difficult.)

5.Ecstasy and Hope (I found relevant case law! All I have to do is write it up and show it to the judge! He’ll see that I’m in the right!)

6.Shock and Disbelief (The judge denied my motion. How can this be? Maybe this judge should be recused.)

7.More Sophisticated Legal Research: Confidence (I’m getting very polished at being a pro se litigant. Maybe I’ll even go to law school. I now understand what I plead incorrectly last time. THIS TIME I’M GOING TO PREVAIL.)

8.Shock and Disbelief. (The judge denied all of my pleadings. The opponents were lying! How can this be!? This judge needs to be recused. I’m going to write a complaint today!)

9.Determination and Courage. (The pro se litigant continues to research the law to the point of isolating himself from friends and familiar activities. Her daily schedule is disrupted and joy in her normal routine is all but erased. However, a feeling that “right” will prevail in the long run and that “God is on my side.”)

10.Shock and Fatigue (The daily visits to the law library have now consumed months and even years of the victim’s life who is attempting to seek justice. Belief that the Court of Appeal will render justice keeps the person hanging on with “fleeting moments of hope.”)

11.Stress Disorder (The Court of Appeal rules in favor of the opponent with little to no explanation provided. The pro se litigant, who has devoted years of his or her life to the “cause” is now mentally and physically fatigued.)

12.Cynicism and Despair. (“The justice system does not work. It is broken. There is nothing I can do to change it.”)

13.Anger and Grief (Analysis of how one wasted years of her life composing court papers while others were out enjoying dancing, sports, gardening, shopping, and socializing.)

14. Restructuring One’s Life. (Rebuilding one’s life after extreme financial and emotional losses. Some lose relationships during the litigation years. Some lose their health. Some stay in the fight for years on end hoping to affect change of the laws. These latter individuals are the rare few who have the stamina and resources to fight the corrupt giants for decades of their life. “Fighting for the cause” becomes their primary objective and way of life.)

Reality and Revictimization..why not everyone can just "move on" and "get over it" .

Courtesy SANCTUARY FOR THE ABUSED This website donates its time & resources to help the abused. (Please support this site and give whatever support you can to this excellent help resource for abuse victims)

Victim, survivor, victimology, victim abuse... why are victims being told to deny their reality?

You have been methodically and diabolically abused and suddenly you hear "don't be a victim, choose to be a survivor." The concept that a victim can always consciously choose how to proceed, is wrong.

The phrase, "move on with your life" is common. In a commanding, offhand and arrogant tone, those who have fought and lost a custody battle, their home, car and savings, family, job and may be suffering physically (adrenal exhaustion is common) are stunned to be told, "well, better move on with your life."

The entire infrastructure of a life is often destroyed leaving the victim, stunned, numb, hypervigilant, indigent, betrayed and perplexed as to why they are expected to "choose" to not be a victim. Give them a time machine and this can be done. Give them revictimization abuse and it cannot. They are victims.

It's time to give that word back its status and in doing so, give respect to the abused. Respect comes in the form of providing help. An empowering, compassionate approach to those who have been stripped of dignity through repeated abuse in courts of law, or by their partners, begins with recognizing and defining the situation of the victim.

What is the definition of a "victim"?
According to the dictionary a victim is: One who is harmed by, or made to suffer from an act, circumstance, agency, or condition; a person who is tricked, swindled, or taken advantage of.

The victim of a narcissist or abuser is traumatized. There are biochemical changes in the body and structural changes in the brain. Thought patterns change, memories are lost, immune system strongly affected, brain cells die, there is chest pain, muscle pain, feelings are intense and emotions chaotic. Victimization is never deserved.

Dr. Frank Ochberg, Harvard trained MD and trauma expert, says our culture now disparages, blames, isolates, and condemns someone for being a victim.

As a victim of any kind of abuse you deserve:

  • 1. Compassion
  • 2. Validation
  • 3. Freedom from therapeutic verbal abuse
  • 4. A support team to open doors to resources
  • 5. A friend, therapist or counselor who can teach you the skills to rebuild your life.

Depending on who you are, this may take a long time or not. Variables include amount and length of abuse, health, supportive family or not, finances, genetic explanatory style (optimism or pessimism), coping skills you may already have and many others. As a victim, you have the right to say, "STOP" to those who blame the victim.

An entire self help industry has arisen that believes if you just really really wanted to, you can be happy and healthy and fully functional as soon as you choose to be. A starting point for recovery are post traumatic stress sites. There you will find trained and compassionate support people with articles that explain trauma healing methods.

The Scientific Basis of Healing, Happiness and Recovery It doesn't matter if you call yourself a victim, survivor or Martian. No one should deny you victim status. It is what is. A victim is not a slothlike creature, nor stupid. Nor is a victim responsible for what happened to him/her and we must stop worrying about language and start helping. A victim is a person with a life in chaos.

What matters is that you get the help you need and the compassionate trained person to give you the skills. The good news is that happiness is trainable, resiliency comes back and psychologists are moving from the Freudian model which has dominated psychology for too long and was wrong to boot, to a model that moves from pathology as the dominant scheme. The process of de-traumatization begins with validation. It then moves to retraining explanatory style. Depending on the depth and time of the abuse, it may take a long or short time to process to empowerment and control. IT IS NOT NECESSARY to analyze every event. It IS necessary to be heard and listened to and to tell your story. Validation is critical.

100 Top Scientists Call "Appalling" Current Level Funding for Alzeirmer's Pandemic

by BBC News

Author Terry Pratchett has handed in a petition to 10 Downing Street calling for an urgent increase in funds for dementia research.

The petition, which has been signed by 20,000 people, describes current level of funding as "appalling".

The campaign is backed by more than 100 top scientists. The Discworld creator, diagnosed with a rare form of Alzheimer's disease this year, also met Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Health Minister Phil Hope.

The petition, addressed to Mr Brown, highlights that Alzheimer's and related diseases, which affect 700,000 people in the UK, currently receives just 3% of research funding.
Mr Pratchett, 60, said: "We are facing, to use the term said to me by one of the leading US researchers, a worldwide tsunami of Alzheimer's and other dementia diseases.

"There's only two ways it can go: researchers, with as much help you can give them, may come up with something that reduces the effects of this dreadful, inhuman disease, or we will have to face the consequences of our failure to prevent the final years of many of us being a long bad dream.

"The strain on carers and their support is bad enough now; before very long the effects on the health service and society itself, will be unbearable." Following his hour-long meeting with Mr Brown, the author said: "We had a very long and frank meeting, and I have to say I was impressed.

"The Prime Minister joined us and he clearly recognises that dementia is a huge problem."
Huge impact
Rebecca Wood, chief executive of the Alzheimer's Research Trust, of which Mr Pratchett is a patron, said dementia cost the UK economy £17bn a year.
"If scientists could work out how to delay the condition by five years, we could halve the number of people who die with dementia.

"The support from across the political spectrum for an increase in dementia research funding is overwhelming; what other issue unites petition signatories like Lord Rees-Mogg and Tony Benn? "The prime minister must take radical action, and fast."

The Department of Health said the forthcoming national dementia strategy would set out plans to speed up diagnosis, and improve patient care.

It also pledged to increase investment in dementia research, which it said had already been boosted.

Trauma: Emotional & Psychological

Trauma. The word brings to mind the effects of such major events as war, rape, kidnapping, abuse, torture, or other similar assault. The emotional aftermath of such events, recognized by the medical and psychological communities, and increasingly by the general public, is known as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Now there is a new field of investigation that is less familiar, even to professionals: emotional or psychological trauma.

Recent research has revealed that emotional trauma can result from such common occurrences as an auto accident, the breakup of a significant relationship, a humiliating or deeply disappointing experience, the discovery of a life-threatening illness or disabling condition, or other similar situations. Traumatizing events can take a serious emotional toll on those involved, even if the event did not cause physical damage.
Regardless of its source, an emotional trauma contains three common elements:
  • it was unexpected;
  • the person was unprepared;
  • andthere was nothing the person could do to prevent it from happening.
If we can communicate our distress to people who care about us and can respond adequately, and if we return to a state of equilibrium following a stressful event, we are in the realm of stress. If we become frozen in a state of active emotional intensity, we are experiencing an emotional trauma – even though sometimes we may not be consciously aware of the level of distress we are experiencing.

Symptoms should be taken seriously and steps should be taken to heal, just as one would take action to heal from a physical ailment. And just as with a physical condition, the amount of time or assistance needed to recover from emotional trauma will vary from one person to another.

The Value of Having a ‘Professional Will’ Stephen Ragusea

Professional associations have long encouraged their members to draw up a professional will. But so far, clinicians aren’t paying much attention.

Recently, we spoke with Stephen Ragusea, a clinician in Key West, FL, who has been promoting the idea in seminars. He says a survey of members of the American Psychological Association (APA) showed that only about 1% had a professional will.

He adds that the idea meets resistance among the therapists he works with--even when he offers a free template they can fill in themselves.

Why aren’t clinicians covering their bases? One reason is that like everyone else, therapists prefer not to think about early death or incapacity. They assume they’ll retire before it becomes an issue, giving them the opportunity to wind the practice down in an orderly manner.

"But winding down a practice in a planned manner is different from covering your practice in the event of death or incapacitation," Ragusea says. "It’s irresponsible not to provide for what happens after your death."

Beyond that, your personal estate could be at risk if you have no mechanism for tying up professional loose ends. Even if your practice is incorporated, he says, you may not be completely protected.

It’s not hard to get started, Ragusea adds. He’s provided a basic, three-page outline for a professional will--which you can read and print out at www.psyfin.com. (Click on "Reader Services.")

He notes that it’s written "in plain language, deliberately avoiding the arcane jargon sometimes used in legal documents." But of course, you should run the finished document past your own attorney.

Here are three other ideas Ragusea says you should keep in mind when it comes to a practice will:

Figure out who you’d like to be your executor--then go and ask. It should be someone within your own discipline who’s familiar with your particular code of professional ethics. This is not a job to be offered or accepted casually. "You’re asking someone to do a lot of work for free."
Keep your attorney aware of what you’re doing. "He needs to know about the will, so he can be prepared to defend it."
Tell your accountant, too. "He may have to answer questions about your finances."

You can contact Stephen Ragusea at 1901 Fogarty Ave., Ste. 5, Key West, FL 33040, (305)294-2500, www.geocities.com/sragusea

Happy Memorial Day From the Editor of ElderAbuseHelp.Org

BubbleShare: Share photos - Play some Online Games.
This Weekend we all went to swim with some very special animals that are friendly and intelligent creatures, the bond established with these amazing animals is hard to describe. It is said that the brain of these mammals are larger than that of humans, they communicate with humans in a manner that have been known to save lives as they can sense when something isn't quite right, e.g. pregnancy , and are sensitive to the disposition of humans being attracted to some and avoiding others who exhibit aggressive behavior . People who are trained in "dolphin language" can tell a lot by interacting with these mammals .

There are many theories as to how they are able to do this, that's a subject to complex to get into here, we'll leave that for another story and just say for now that sharing a portion of our holiday with these special creatures is an experience we will not soon forget!

SCIENCE PROVES PRAYER WORKS

by Irene A. Masiello

Larry Dossey, MD is a tall, warm, down-to-earth Texas internist whose work brings us a powerful, exciting and compelling message: SCIENCE HAS PROVEN THAT PRAYER WORKS!

With our country at war and all of us needing some inSPIRITional© news, it is an especially poignant and profound time to remember that there is "something more" than our physical selves. A healthy life is, after all, a balance of the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of our lives.

Dr. Dossey is the author of nine books on spirituality, consciousness and health including the New York Times bestseller Healing Words: The Power of Prayer. He is also executive editor of EXPLORE: The Journal of Science and Healing, a publication of Elsevier, publisher of 1800 of the world's leading medical journals including JAMA, the New England Journal of Medicine, the Lancet, the British Medical Journal, et al.

Prior to the publication of Healing Words only 3 American medical schools devoted course work to the exploration of the role of spiritual beliefs, religion and prayer in health. In 2000, over sixty medical schools had instituted courses addressing such issues with many using Dr. Dossey's works as textbooks.

Dr. Dossey's work has deep implications and because of it, he an internationally known lecturer who has spoken at Johns Hopkins, the Mayo Clinic, Harvard, Cornell, the National Institute of Health, etc. He has been a media favorite for his charm, wit, warmth and profound wisdom and, therefore, has done scores of radio, TV and in-print interviews.

The Starlight Network caught up with Larry Dossey at the Civic Center in Savannah , GA where he was addressing a large group of health care professionals in an event sponsored by Memorial Health Center . We asked him if his work has met with cynicism from the medical establishment. He told us 20 years ago it did but not anymore. Judging by the enthusiasm of the crowd and the incredible numbers pointing the way to some stunning scientific evidence it is easy to see why Dr. Dossey enjoys such popularity.

Dr. Dossey gave amazing statistics that were the result of scientific studies too numerous to mention here. These studies were conducted the way science investigates any illness or medication, that is, with "the double blind" experiment. The results were staggering: 50% to 100% of the time prayer has beneficial, measurable effects on a patient's recovery.

In his talk, Dr. Dossey explained that if this were a result of a pharmacological discovery the drug companies would be singing its praises. However, since no one will grow wealthy in the material sense of the word from this documentation there is less excitement about something quite remarkable and the scientific data says it all: prayer works!

Additionally, according to the scientific studies Dr. Dossey states prayer works no matter what version of God or Goddess one embraces. Whether it is directive prayer, in that one requests a certain outcome, or non-directive prayer, in that one requests the best possible outcome according to God's will prayer works. The religion of those who prayed is not a factor, either. Neither is the religious conviction of the receiver of the prayer or whether the receiver knows they are being prayed for or not.

Dr. Dossey's book, Reinventing Medicine, is yet another profound work pointing the way to the future of medicine where death is not feared or seen as a defeat but simply a natural part of the process of life and being a physical, mental and spiritual being.

Without a doubt, Dr. Dossey has made a monumental contribution in bringing the spiritual component of the body-mind-spirit connection to the forefront of modern medicine.

Beware the sociopath No heart, No conscience, No remorse

Most psychopaths are very arrogant and cocky. However, when charming a potential victim, they say all the "right" things and make you believe they are kind-hearted souls; not always, but often enough.

The truth is, psychopaths are not altruistic and do not really care about friendships or ties. Guggenbuhl-Craig states that they are very talented at appearing much more humble than the average person, but are hardly so.

A psychopath may claim, for instance (if he's from a low socio-economic class), that he dislikes rich people intensely, but at the same time, he will inwardly yearn and envy what they have.

The psychopath is filled with greed inside, relating to the world through power, even though, as I said, on the outside he can claim to be on the side of the disenfranchised or the downtrodden.

As mentioned, psychopaths often claim to settle for second best (being their own worst enemy) and then think they deserve better. This may be manifested in the way they seek power -- either through money (i.e. material goods), manipulation and/or treating people as objects. By enacting such behaviours, the psychopath is also trying to "get back" at society and the world, in order to gain retribution. They will spend their entire lives doing this.

Psychopaths demonstrate antisocial behavior and an aggressive narcissism -- they use people through charm, intimidation or violence, she said."They have a parasitic lifestyle -- they live off people.

Their whole mindset is domination over other people," she said. "Psychopaths are not necessarily criminal in their activities, but they are attracted to positions of power.

They have no anxiety about their behavior."Psychopaths see themselves as wronged. They can be paranoid, feel persecuted, feel a need for revenge. They harbor a lot of persecutory beliefs." (i.e. - They are the victim, not you, in their heads)

"Psychopaths have a need for recognition, not just a need for attention," she said. "They have a sense of being invincible, of 'I can outsmart you.' They're taken in by their own narcissism. It's almost like a game."

Sociopaths are masters of manipulation. So before you give away your love, your money or your life, read this website and the Lovefraud Blog.

Quit Claim Deeds+Alzheimer's=Windfall Profit

Miami,Florida USA.- He was buried on Monday ! I had written to you about how he was isolated and secluded from family. We got to see him last year and he got a pneumonia in the nursing home. Ended up in Larkin Hospital then sent back to the Nursing home and then finally to Hialeah Hospital. He passed away from a heart attack!!!!

My father went to see him at the hospital till he passed away. However the wife's daughter took his property away while secluding him last year. I just saw legal documents showing that the name preparing such QCD -Quit Claim Deed is the same as the nursing home owner where he was staying . It is strange. I think there is so much bad things surrounding his death and these people stripping him from his home. I feel sad that he died and they did this to him !!!!

MY uncle Pepe's Wife's Daughter filed a Quit Claim Deed on 5/25/2007 when Tio Pepe was missing or secluded away without our knowledge where he was. He had Alzheimer's and so this document should not be valid or legal.

We are not going to pursue this but it was not legal when a person is secluded and isolated from family and with a mind set that they forget things.......THis person harmed my uncle !!!! Her mother could of signed it for herself but not for Tio.

Its just sad what they did to Tio Pepe !!!

---------------------------------------------------

I am sorry to hear that your Tio passed away, they have to do those Quit Claim Deeds after they have Alzheimer's , same with my mother, they have a lifetime during which they ignore the elder and then when they are on their death bed they show up with documents on hand.

What's even more sad is that the authorities don't see it for what it is, elder financial abuse and robbery and intervene, the rule is normally once you notice their mental powers declining, the first one to get to them wins, no matter prior directives, Wills or Trusts, it's better to circumvent probate by showing up on their deathbeds pen in hand and attorney in tow or so it seems.
and Alida and I don't blame you for not pursuing it legally, elder justice is for the rich, it took Clara over $100,000 in legal fees for the court to come to the same conclusion we knew from day one, that she had been improperly removed from her home.

Reform in the Air For Mental Health Patients

by Maria C Gallo,Esquire.

Dade.-Co. Florida Apparently, Miami-Dade County judge Steve Leifman presented a groundbreaking, collaborative plan to treat a narrow group of mentally ill people currently being warehoused behind bars.

This 170-page report explains that currently half the persons taking up expensive beds at forensic hospitals are also charged with low-level crimes, like resisting arrest and cocaine possession, but are not getting treatment in jail.

97% of this population will serve their time and then be released into the general population - all without treatment.

This legislation will re-direct this population into mental health treatment instead of jail, thus redirecting $48 million dollars into mental health instead of inmate control and housing.

As you know mental health legislation and guardianship law are close cousins and this legislation would be helpful to the cause of elder and vulnerable population protection.

Clara & Family Send Regards From Puerto Plata D.R.

Clara is spending time with her family who shower her with love and attention all of her waking hours. She is never alone for a day, or an hour or a moment. She is getting really spoiled and used to her surroundings and is doing surprisingly well , standing up to pray after prayer meetings , and dancing when she hears music which is often.

*Experts estimate that one in five elderly Americans are victims of financial exploitation. Some studies put the figure at closer to 50 percent. However, only 4 percent to 15 percent of such cases are ever reported to authorities, and even those that are reported often don't result in convictions. Even if there's a conviction, the penalties imposed for such crimes are much less than for similar offenses where the victim is younger.

Blogger of The Year.- "As Time Goes By"

Blogger of the Year* by Ronni Bennet.-As Time Goes by
This is the story of my mother's final illness - a time we shared for three months, day in and day out. Although it happened in 1992, it remains the most profound event in my life. I hope it is as uplifting for you as many readers say it has been for them.
In 1991, my mother was found to have cancer. Her right breast was removed and when the nice ladies from a cancer survivors’ group came ‘round with implant information, Mom thanked them and shooed them away. “What do I need breasts for,” she said. “I’m 74, not 24."..........
Sometimes it seems that a thing is not real, does not have shape or size and does not take up space in the world until it has a name. And so it was with Mom’s cancer. Although her energy remained low after her surgery the previous year, she had not been sick. She shopped and cooked and swam and saw friends, continued to build her dollhouses and lived a slower, but normal life. Until she found ......
Having never raised a child nor nursed anyone who suffered from anything more complex than a bad flu, I was ignorant of what 24/7 caregiving entails, particularly over many weeks and months, and I didn't have the wit, as I prepared to move my life from New York City to Sacramento, to imagine much beyond administering pain medicine and holding.......
A family, even one as small as mine, is an intricate web of individual and group dynamics. The complexities are bound up in family history, personal sensibilities, secrets and memories which can be both faulty and true. A family cannot be understood by friends, certainly not by strangers and is often a mystery to family members themselves, though they know in their bones their roles. It is well for outsiders to keep this in mind. By the time my mother was diagnosed......
If I’d had any time to think it over, I would have been surprised at how easily Mom, previously independent to a fault, adapted to helplessness. Once bedridden, she deferred household decisions to me as she slipped effortlessly into an almost regal, though never imperious, manner in making known her personal needs........
Mom owned what I still believe was the world’s longest sofa. The day came when she announced she wanted to move to the living room, and the sofa, she said, would suit her fine as a final resting place, so to speak. The three of us laughed together at her joke, I arranged linens on the sofa and Joe carried Mom from her bedroom.
In the weeks I’d been caring for her, Mom's weight had dropped dramatically. There wasn’t much padding left on her bones and it took only a couple of hours to.......
Without my knowing, Mom had arranged with her best friend, Barbara, to sneak a cake into the apartment and on 7 April 1992, the two of them and Joe surprised me with a party for my 51st birthday. Later that same day, after Barbara had gone home, Mom said she needed to talk with me alone. I couldn’t imagine what she would not want Joe to hear, we’d become such a tight little family, but if that’s what the lady wants. So I sent Joe out to the patio and pulled up a stool next to the sofa. “I want you to help me die,” she said. She told me ...........
From my birthday forward, I woke each morning wondering if that would be the day Mom would repeat her request to me to "help her die." I also wondered if it had been the right thing to require an exhausted, dying woman to voice such an audacious question a second time before I followed through. But there was no one to consult without making the person a potential accomplice to a crime.
The natural end, Mom’s doctor had told me, would come quietly. She would fall into a coma and although her breathing would be ............
In life, our bodies are inviolate by law, exposed only with our consent as when to a physician or a lover. In death, they become public property. Most frequently in the United States, preparation of a body for viewing and cremation or burial is done by strangers at a funeral home without family involvement. It is how our culture helps paper over the reality, the finality, of death.
Sometime after Mom died, Joe carried her body to ......
We had become family, Joe and me. Three months of shared responsibility for Mom's care had made it so, and it was the natural thing to do when he stayed on with me after Mom died. The companionship of this kind and gentle man was a welcome antidote to the sudden vacuum in my days without the focus around whom all household activity had flowed for so long.
Now there were no dentures to clean, no diapers to change, no medical surprises to field. Even my job as research director for an NBC-TV daytime interview program, One of One with John Tesh, came to an abrupt end when the ........
When I left home at age 17 within a week of graduating from high school in 1958, it was unspoken but understood between Mom and me that the move was permanent, that returning home was not an option. Or at least, that’s what I believed and belief, warranted or not, is all that is necessary for some things to be so.
I also believed then that Mom had nothing to teach me, certainly nothing about the .......
