Elders and Third World Countries

Recently the state mandated the closure of our only elder care facility here in Key West, Florida due to allegations and substandard care. In such a rich county where tourist dollars roll in un abated we wondered how the poorer third world country were doing with such a delicate task and did an in depth investigation into elder care in a third world country facility . We brought video camera, notebook and interviewed staff members as as well as resident members.

Clara is spending time with her family who shower her with love and attention all of her waking hours. She is never alone for a day, or an hour or a moment. She is getting really spoiled and used to her surroundings and is doing surprisingly well , standing up to pray after prayer meetings , and dancing when she hears music which is often.

*Experts estimate that one in five elderly Americans are victims of financial exploitation. Some studies put the figure at closer to 50 percent. However, only 4 percent to 15 percent of such cases are ever reported to authorities, and even those that are reported often don't result in convictions. Even if there's a conviction, the penalties imposed for such crimes are much less than for similar offenses where the victim is younger.

It's Time To Stop !

Helping fight Elder Abuse in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.

Friday night I was asked to go on live on Channel 3 in Puerto Plata, in the Dominican Republic . The show was entertaining and I took that opportunity to take the station's director Manuel aside and ask him to review the our web site; "ElderAbuseHelp.Org" and to help me produce and air a video to help bring more government funding to a nursing home in Puerto Plata that's doing such a effective job with very limited resources.

I was asked to sing and dance, although I am not either a singer or a dancer, I will do
anything for or to highlight the Plight of Our Elders. I made a poor but honest attempted to sing and dance to the local music.

The hospitality and the party after the show was fantastic and reminded my why I fell in love with the Dominican people many years ago.

I thank Manuel for asking me to appear on the show. I was able to do something I have not done in three long years, which was sing and dance and to be again the person I was once was before the malicious and deprecating act of elder abuse was inflicted upon my mother, Clara Fernandez .

Today We Went to the Top!

Today we climbed to the top of the world or so it seemed. We only had to wait a few minutes for the cable car that was to take us up for a ten minute ride to the top of Isabel de Torres, a looming landmark in Puerto Plata that rises 2,640 feet above sea level in this tropical city of 130,000 people.

Once we reached the top of the mountain we enjoyed walking the sunken botanical gardens, this was such a majestic subtropical mountain reserve with a plethora of colorful birds, we all took turns imitating the bird calls with Laura coming in a close 2nd place behind Judy's brother Johann, who fooled even the native birds with his birdcalls.

We found the trail to the Indian Caves blocked by a fallen tree which I tried to raise, but ended up going around it.

The cooler climate was so refreshing that it seemed as if we could spend the entire day there.

At the summit of the mountain, the statue of Christ the Redeemer held his arms out as if to welcome us, it faces it's famous twin on Corcovado mountain 2,296 feet high in the Tijuaca Forest overlooking Rio De Janeiro.

At the end of the day it was "Last Call" for the cable car going down and it was time to make our way back down to earth! the steep decline and the breath taking ride back to the city was the perfect way to end our day!

We were all very pleased to know that this adventure is also handicap friendly so that the elderly can also enjoy this tropical treasure!!!

Maureen McCormick appears in video with Brad Paisley

June 26, 2007 — Today is the iTunes world premiere of Brad Paisley's new video for "Online," the second single from his new CD, 5th Gear.

"I think it's great because finally there's a place where you can buy a music video!" Brad tells Dial-Global. "Everybody's always wondered about that. In the beginning of my career — like 1999, 2000 — we would do these videos, and [fans] would say, 'Where can I get that?' And you couldn't get it anywhere."

Brad says he can't wait for fans to see the video, which includes a couple of special guests he's worked with before. "The images are pretty cool in the lyric and the only way to really top it was literally to get some of these really interesting actors."

Blending Paisley's trademark humor and musicianship, the video reunites Brad with friends and guest stars William Shatner and Jason Alexander (who also directed), both of whom appeared in the video for his 2003 hit "Celebrity." Mixing concert footage with special guests (including Maureen McCormick, best known as Marcia Brady; Estelle Harris, Jason's TV mom on "Seinfeld"; and tourmates Kellie Pickler and Taylor Swift), the video storyline shows how easy it is to hide your shortcomings and be "so much cooler online."

"This is really cool — it's almost like a sitcom, you know?" Brad says. "We had a ball making this."

A lot of us were left wondering what happened at the hearing at the end of May where accusations of elder abuse and character assassinations by Maureen's brother Kevin were being made, and Maureen was not allowed to see her father. There are a lot of us that would like to know how this is handled.. In spite of the news blackout if anyone in the L.A area has news regarding this hearing would you please pass it on.

Elder Abuse Awareness Month - Chas Gayheart Reports in Hazard ,Kentucky.

Elder abuse awareness month is quickly approaching and there are several ways you can become more involved and educated.

Senior citizens are thankful to have a safe place to meet everyday and friends to share their time with. But other elders throughout eastern Kentucky and the country are dealing with a growing problem.

Elder abuse is something that affects us all," says Stacie Noble of KRADD. "It can affect your parents it can affect your grandparents and create awareness in the community on who to report to what the physical signs are."

There are several ways noble says elders are abused. Some are physically abused while others are taken advantage of through financial scams.

.....members of the Kentucky river council against maltreatment of elders say it's important to make yourself aware of uniforms worn by police and other legitimate groups so you don't let anyone into your home that doesn't belong there. One thing everyone should do is report possible elder abuse to authorities.

She also asks you to report elder abuse and you can remain anonymous.

Hazard , Kentucky what a beautiful town nestled in the Appalachians Mountains where I used to take my German Shepperd out to climb the explore the hills, abandoned mines, creeks, and the many arrowheads I found on the river beds, was a very fond memory I have of growing in that house perched on Broadway Av. a winding road away from town, just short of an overpass, what a beautiful city, I think of you, when I was growing up in my early teens, while my dad Dr. A.J. Fernandez practiced medicine in Hazard General Hospital, before migrating to Florida.
