A quote from the detective himself when an 87 year old woman with dementia was shot by police with a taser gun and died.

When 87 year old Phyllis Owens returned home from the hospital she was suffering from dementia. In addition she wore a pacemaker for her heart.

Hearing noises outside her home at approximately 2:30 PM she picked up a gun and waved it at a construction worker asking him what he was doing there "that time of night."

Terrified of an obviously confused little old lady waving a gun, the construction worker called police who was successful in talking her into putting down the gun. When she picked it up once again the taser was used on her.

Sadly, Mrs Owens died that evening.

After her death it was found that her "gun" was not a real gun after all - just a pellet gun.

A Doctor from the state medical examiners office said, "Owens had a history of heart disease and that was the cause of death."

Not So Surprising; when Journalists showed up, they were ordered to leave.

As Fall River family remain jailed, elder woman they allegedly neglected dies

FALL RIVER (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - An elderly woman who was allegedly abused at the hands of her own children died today at St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River.

Mary Arauio died today, on her 81st birthday, after being found Saturday at her Fall River home with severe bed sores so deep that tendons could be seen through her decomposing skin. Police also said it appeared she had been in a chair of her own urine and feces for nearly a month,

Five of her children have already been charged

The five family members already charged in connection with this case are:

Duarte Cabral, 51, Karen Cabral, 49, Arauio's children, and Corey Cabral, 21, Scott Cabral, 24, Keith Cabral, 29, her grandchildren, have all been charged with varying degrees of elder neglect and inflicting serious injury.

The problem is there are a lot of bad people out there, who would abuse older folks.

The police considers these matters 'family matters' and until there is a body , like here, they refuse to get involved in 'family squabbles' leaving the elder folks caught in the crossfire with deadly often deadly results.

If you bring in APS they don't have the brainpower to tell the good guys from the bad guys and they all lumped as bad...

It's a lose-lose situation, but the guardians of course have to protect the older folks from children like these and have carta blanche to do as they like.

In the meantime, it is the guardians who point out stories like these to remind the public why they have to protect the elders from people like you or I.

In my own case, a family member held deep seeded resentment against my parents and when my parents were unable to protect themselves, this family member and his friend exploited them and separated them when they were most vulnerable and they even actually got help from "THE SYSTEM", thus the ensuing civil legal battle was when the elders got caught in the cross fire, and it was merciless, my father died of stress and a broken heart Jan 9, 2006 after being forceful separated from his wife of 56 years...

BELTON -Texas Oct 6 ,2009 A 38-year-old Temple woman accused of denying her 74-year-old mother medical treatment and starving her to death avoided a trial when she pleaded guilty to murder and received a 23-year sentence.

The plea agreement for Katrina Michelle Hoelscher was consummated Friday when prosecutor Nelson Barnes and defense attorney Michael White met in advance of Monday's trial date.

Barnes said both sides agreed that the details of the case were "horrific."

The case began in late January as a call about an elderly person dying at home. Four months later, after an investigation by the Temple Police Department that included an autopsy, it turned into a murder indictment.

The autopsy on Nell Lorine Hoelscher supported suspicions police had when responding to the call, Assistant District Attorney Paul McWilliams said in May. It indicated she died of malnourishment and medical neglect.

The two-paragraph indictment accused the younger Hoelscher of neglecting the needs of her mother, who suffered from Alzheimer's disease for several years and had moved in with her daughter after her condition worsened, Ms. Hockensmith said in May.

Woman Found Dead, Daughter Arrested For Elder Abuse

Bakersfield, CA--Darlene Blair was found dead on her living me floor around noon on Friday. Her daughter, Dana Blair was arrested for elder abuse.

The Kern County Sheriffs Department says they were called to the home at 1111 Dawn way in South Bakersfield after receiving a call from a medical unit that had been dispatched to the home for the death.

While medical crews were at the home a verbal argument broke out and they called deputies to assist.

Neighbors say they have called 911 numerous times and have witnessed Dana abusing her mother, "It all was bad, the black eyes, the bloody lips, the bruised ribs, everything, it was bad" said Jean Hodge, Blair's next door neighbor.

Hodge claims that on Thursday night she witnessed Dana push her mother off the front step. Hodge went over to assist with the injuries and says Darlene looked like she "had been in a car accident."

Deputies were called to the home for that incident but according to Hodge Darlene refused treatment and help so they left.

"Its the elderly not wanting to speak against their loved ones, they love them, and it was her daughter, I mean what are you going to do," said Hodge.

The Sheriffs department does not know if the alleged abuse had anything to do with the death. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday to determine the actual cause.

Brothers guilty of beating, urinating on grandmother

Two Salt Lake City brothers accused of assaulting their grandmother as she was taking a shower and urinating on her pleaded guilty Thursday to misdemeanors.

Christopher Eugene Hansen, 22, and Michael Levi Hansen Jr., 20, each pleaded guilty to abuse of an elder adult, which originally was charged as a felony and dropped to a Class A misdemeanor; lewdness, a Class B misdemeanor; and domestic criminal mischief, a Class B misdemeanor.

The brothers are slated to be sentenced Oct. 5 by Judge Robin Reese.

The elder abuse charge carries a maximum sentence of one year in jail and the Class B offenses have a punishment of up to 180 days in jail each. The two could be ordered to serve up to two years behind bars if the sentences are stacked.

The attack occurred July 2 in Salt Lake City, where the two men forced their way into a bathroom in the home they shared with their 66-year-old grandmother as she was taking a shower, according to charging documents.

Prosecutors say Christopher Hansen threw bottles of shampoo and baby powder at the woman, punched her in the face and urinated on her. They say Michael Hansen shoved and hit the grandmother as she tried to leave the bathroom and urinated on her clothing.

Police reported bruising on the victim's face and a cut on her head.

*Euthanasia is starting to sound ,more and more attractive everyday, perhaps a collar with a timer that at age 65 it emits a painful electric current forcing the wearer to go to a clinic where he/she would be euthanised. The alternatives, to have your assets confiscated, be forced into a nursing home against your will where you will be chemically restrained, and all contact with your loved ones blocked... does not sound too attractive...

Elderly Face Possible Beatings and Mistreatments When Confined to Nursing Homes and ALF's

QUINCY, Mass., Aug. 15 (UPI) -- A nursing assistant has been charged with hitting and beating four elderly women with Alzheimer's disease at a Boston-area assisted living facility.

Kara Murphy, 23, of Quincy was being held under home confinement, the Boston Herald reported. She was charged Friday with seven counts of assaulting the elderly.

Murphy worked at the Atrium at Faxon Woods in Quincy, a privately owned assisted living facility. A colleague reported Murphy to police, investigators said.

The co-worker described a rampage last Saturday in which Murphy allegedly attacked one woman by grabbing her head to get her to a toilet when she began defecating. Murphy then allegedly bounced on the lap of a 96-year-old woman confined to a wheelchair.

Murphy, who has been fired from her job and was arrested Thursday, faces a long prison term if convicted.

Her aunt, Loretta Palmacci, told the Herald Murphy might have been assaulted by one of the residents.

"She's been a very kind and caring person," Palmacci said. "I don't know what happened. Sometimes she would come home very tense. You can imagine all the different things that go on with Alzheimer's (patients)."

`Senior Tsunami' warnings being heard throught the land

With Los Angeles County facing a "senior tsunami" in the decades ahead, county officials are not adequately prepared to deal with the explosion in demand for senior services and a growing rate of physical and financial crimes against the elderly, the civil grand jury warns in a new report.

As baby boomers age, the county's senior population is expected to double from 1.6 million today to 3 million by 2030, placing increasing pressure on the nearly 100 programs in 24 county departments that provide services to seniors and adults with disabilities, according to county data.

"This pending `senior tsunami' will dramatically impact the need for senior services for elders," grand jurors wrote. "This civil grand jury investigation shows the county is not adequately prepared as the population ages for the significant increase in demand for elder abuse prevention programs and services."

Also with the rise in the senior population has come a big jump in crimes targeting the elderly.

Michael Gargiulo, deputy-in- charge of the Elder Abuse Section in the District Attorney's Office, said the number of elder abuse cases his office is prosecuting has nearly doubled from about 40 per month in 2005 to 90 now.

In one recent case that prosecutors said was particularly disturbing, a 21-year-old former employee of an upscale Calabasas assisted-living center is scheduled for trial in August, accused of torturing and physically abusing an elderly patient before his death.

Prosecutors say Cesar Ulloa, who had worked at Silverado Senior Living, allegedly punched Elmore Kittower, 80, and attacked him numerous times, resulting in numerous rib fractures and other injuries.

That their mother killed their 68-year-old father was brutal. But the close-knit brothers - Davis Jr., Scott and Jeff - were then branded "money grubbing" cads by their mother and her lawyers, who sought to justify the slaying of the respected and popular Waycross eye doctor.

"It's been a war zone ... I felt like I've walked around with this stigma," Scott Jacobs, 41, said the day after the verdict. "I haven't had time to grieve."

He and his oldest brother, Davis Jacobs Jr., recounted for jurors numerous incidents of their mother abusing their father, who a psychologist later testified was the battered spouse.

Battered men generally don't report abuse and often don't leave their abuser because they are ashamed, afraid or blame themselves for causing the violence, District Attorney Rick Currie said.

It all goes back to more of the same, abused elders don't report abuse because of the stigma, and if they did who would believe them, when my mother was abused and we reported, the Monroe County Sheriff that investigated Henry B. Hamilton stated that because there were not any signs of physical abuse that there must not be any.

Elders in the US are being finished off at an alarming rate, as long as the incidents are not reported in the mass media they are seen as isolated incidents which makes for the killing off of individual elders one at a time much easier......

In reality we folks in the USA don't really need many enemies we are doing a pretty good job amongst ourselves of killing and preying on each other for money.....

The month of May is almost behind us, and with it the flowers and candy many of us showered on our mothers earlier in the month to mark Mother’s Day. But many older mothers are getting showered with attention of another kind – abuse.

Take the case of Ruth, an 89-year-old woman who was in fairly good health when she entered an Iowa nursing home for physical therapy in 2008. When she left to go home 25 days later, Ruth’s leg was rotting and consumed by gangrene. She died three months later. State and federal officials rightly called it neglect, and fined the nursing home $112,650.

25 years of congressional hearings on its devastating effects have produced no federal law to address the problem in a comprehensive manner, even though elder-battering has been called both a disgrace and a “burgeoning national scandal.”

Son arraigned today for murder, elder abuse of 81-year-old father

A 46-year-old man is scheduled to be arraigned today on charges of murder and cruelty to a dependent adult for the alleged slaying of his 81-year-old father, who died as a result of what authorities describe as several blows to the head.

Charles Edward Ellsworth died Friday at a Fontana hospital "as a result of being struck several times in the head'' by his son, Michael Thomas Ellsworth, at the victim's residence in rural Homeland on April 15, sheriff's and coroner's investigators said.

Deputies investigated a physical dispute reported about 1:40 a.m. April 15 in the 30700 block of Palmetto Palm Avenue in Homeland, between Hemet and Perris, according to sheriff's Sgt. Dennis Gutierrez.

It was not clear from sheriff's and coroner's accounts whether anyone was arrested or received medical treatment on April 15, Gutierrez said. But last Wednesday, the elder Ellsworth was admitted to a Menifee hospital, and he died at 11:07 a.m. Friday at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Fontana, sheriff's and coroner's officials said.

Michael Ellsworth was arrested at 3:30 p.m. Friday by deputies from the Perris station and was booked on suspicion of murder and cruelty to a dependent adult with great bodily injury.

Nurse Caught Punching 85 year Old man in The Face

Fortunately another nurse saw this sick behavior by the people entrusted to take care of our elders and reported it.

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. -- A South Florida nurse has been jailed after allegedly punching an elderly patient in the face.

Forty-three-year-old Richard Paul Anderson was arrested on a charge of abuse of an elderly person.

Police say another nurse saw him punching an 85-year-old man in the face several times; the victim needed nine stitches. Police say Anderson won't explain what happened but that he previously told another hospital employee that he hit the patient in self-defense.

Man Kills Eight at US Care Home

A gunman has opened fire at a nursing home in the US state of North Carolina, killing six people at the scene, and two others who died later in hospital.

A police officer and the gunmen were among those injured in the incident in the town of Carthage, police said.

Police units at Pinelake Health and Rehab Center, where the gunman opened fire at 1000 local time (1500 GMT).

A 45-year-old man is under arrest, and will be charged with eight murders, a local district attorney said.

"At this time the suspect, Robert Stewart, is in custody facing these eight counts of murder, felony assault on a law enforcement officer, and other charges are pending at this time," said Maureen Krueger, Moore County district attorney.

The man is not believed to be related to any of the residents at the home.

Seven residents and one nurse were among the fatalities.

The facility, about 60 miles (100 km) south-west of Raleigh, has 90 beds and specialises in caring for people with Alzheimer's disease.

Eastpointe widow Joann Hornberger, 77, rented an upstairs bedroom to a 43-year-old boarder because she needed the money and help around the house.

On June 6, 2007, the man came home drunk, beat Hornberger and tried to smother her with a pillow. He shot up the house, terrorizing her until dawn. Friends found Hornberger battered but alive.
"It was a nightmare," said Hornberger, who is sharing her experience as a volunteer at local senior centers. "I had known him for about four years ... I thought he could stay with me and maybe do some odds and ends around the house."

Senior citizens increasingly are being victimized by desperate people looking for soft targets in Michigan's hard economy.

Fraud and violence against the elderly are on the rise throughout Metro Detroit, according to law enforcement and advocates for senior citizens.

"It's stunning, the level of violence we are beginning to see," said Thomas Wenzel, principal Wayne County prosecutor for elder abuse.

Illegal Immigrant Savagely Beats and Blind Older Woman

A man has been arrested for allegedly beating and blinding a 78-year-old widow inside her Daly City home after she surprised him during a robbery attempt, police said today.

Jose Perez-Gonzalez, 29, was arrested Nov. 26 by Mexican authorities in his hometown of Guadalajara. He has been charged by San Mateo County prosecutors with attempted murder, attempted armed robbery, burglary, mayhem and elder abuse.

On Jan. 12, Perez-Gonzalez, an illegal immigrant living in South San Francisco, was driven to the victim's home in the Serramonte neighborhood by Juan Cuellar, 37, of Daly City, said police Lt. Jay Morena.
As Cuellar waited in his car, Perez-Gonzalez pried open a rear sliding-glass door, police said. When the woman confronted him, Perez-Gonzalez allegedly beat her in the face with his metal pry bar, an attack that left her blind.

The assailant fled with Cuellar, authorities said. Cuellar was later arrested and is being held on a federal immigration violation for being in the United States illegally from El Salvador.

Woman Charged in Mother's Death

Jackson County Prosecutors charged a Lee’s Summit woman Tuesday in connection with the death of the woman’s mother.

Glenda I. Grimes, 55, of Lee’s Summit was charged with second-degree murder, second-degree domestic assault and elder abuse.

According to court documents, Grimes’ mother died on the evening of Feb. 20 while Grimes was out at dinner. In addition to several severe bed sores, the victim’s leg was broken but had only been wrapped in tape.

At no time did Stevens receive medical treatment for her broken leg,
Her report indicated the victim suffered 25 fractures, including multiple rib fractures dating from less than two weeks old to more than a month old.

Bond on Grimes has been set at $100,000/10 percent or secured. Her next court date will be June 25 at 1:30 at the Independence Courthouse Annex.

Ted Stith Sr. left his Cincinnatti farm to visit a friend in Florida.
He probably won't return home alive.

As of Monday afternoon, he'd been seven days without food and water, a decision made by his son who left his father to die in Florida and returned home.

And one of his best friends who has been by his side for the past week had been barred from visiting him.

"It's a scary, scary situation. If I hadn't lived through it, hadn't seen it for myself, I would never have believed such a thing could happen in our country"..
