Sumter duo faces theft, forgery, fraud charges

South Carolina,USA

Michael L. Baxley, 33, of 5370 Christine Drive, and Janet M. Baxley, 38, of 31 Gaddy St., were charged Wednesday with exploitation of a vulnerable adult; financial transaction card fraud; burglary; petit larceny; and multiple counts of forgery.

According to a release, the Sumter County Sheriff's Office Investigation Division has been working on several cases involving these two suspects for more than a year. Reports said the two befriended an 83-year-old man and forged more than $20,000 worth of checks in the man's name.
The suspects also, according to reports, pried open the victim's window and stole money from his wallet, resulting in the burglary charge. Investigators said the suspects have admitted to removing copper from air conditioners from approximately 100 residences throughout the county, and the investigation is ongoing. More charges are likely, investigators said, as information is gathered and victims are identified.
