Australian Aboriginal Elder Says Intervention a Betrayal

ABC Radio Australia

An Aboriginal elder who has been helping the Australian government negotiate a 99-year lease on Elcho Island off the coast of Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory says its intervention on communities is a betrayal of trust.

The Australian government is planning to take over Northern Territory Aboriginal communities to combat child sexual abuse.

He does not believe the intervention will work, and says it will poison relations for a long time to come.
