A Case of Too Many Criminals Walking the Streets

GLASSBORO, N.J., By RICHARD G. JONES Nov. 1 — Donald Farrell did just about everything right. As Mr. Farrell, a 19-year-old Rowan University sophomore, walked to a convenience store the night of Saturday, Oct. 27, he had followed nearly all of the precautions given to the college’s students about staying safe. He was traveling in a group. It was about 9 p.m., so he was not out particularly late. And he moved along busy roads in well-lighted areas.

Somehow, though, those safety measures were not enough. After he and his friends left the store, Mr. Farrell was attacked by a group of men and beaten to death — a crime that the authorities said was a robbery gone awry.
